Finding the right COM port or baude rate
« on: November 13, 2006, 12:42:01 pm »
Those GPS devices which do not connect with a cable to the main plug in the bottom of the PDA will not work with the default Port Settings. You need to find the correct COM port and baude rate.

Easiest way to do that is to read the manual of your GPS device. Normally, there will be a section telling you about PORT settings for your GPS. Try these settings first, they are normally correct.

Most of all you need to make sure that no other application is using the COM port of your GPS device. "GPSInfo" is a typical application that runs on the same COM port as your GPS (it even tells you that the GPS is working fine, but at the same time blocks SeeYou Mobile from accessing it). The best way to make sure that no other application is using the GPS's COM port is to soft reset the PDA and run SeeYou Mobile only after reboot.

If you would like to do it the hard way, you may also follow this procedure:
1. Go to Menu > Settings > Hardware > Terminal > Port Settings
2. Change the COM port (press OK each time) until you see something coming through. If it's readable, your fine. If it's not, keep searching.

Dear Andrej,

Unfortunately I've encountered a simular problem. I use an hx4700 now and attached with that a bluetooth TomTom GPS mouse.
If I try to manage the Port settings, the only choise from the menu is com1 or com2. But from discussions about this topic I learned that perhaps com6 or com8 would be more suitable ?
Also I have read that it is not OK using TomTom and See You on the same device; indeed I performed a soft reset but until now without success.

I would appreciate if you would have any further clue or suggestion.

Thanks in advance for your kind co-operation and help !

Kind regards,
JanVen

Hi JanVen
I use TomTom and SeeYou on my ASUS A696 without trouble.  Use the Exit menu item when you have finished with SeeYou, and the Exit Application menu item on TomTom, to make sure that they each close the COM port and leave it free for the other program.  You can only connect one of them to the GPS at any time.
For some strange reason SeeYou does not show you the full list of available COM ports.
If you want to use a COM port higher than COM2, just type the port name (e.g. COM5) into the Port box in Menu > Settings > Hardware > Terminal > Port Settings.
Good Luck
Donk

Thanks a lot Donk, it works !

Although not visible in the pick list  (com1 and com2 only), it is still possible to use the virtual keyboard and change the COM port into com8.
After that, the BT GPS  was recognised inmediately.
Thanks again for you help and CU !
KR, JanVen

To connect to a Bluetooth GPS you need to pair the PDA and GPS before running SeeYou Mobile. Your GPS's documentation will have information about how to pair the two devices. Once you have the devices paired and you know which COM port the PDA is using to communicate to the GPS, then all you have to do is follow the procedure in the first post of this thread.

I managed to get it working on my Navigon 5110 with COM port 2 with a 57600 baud rate.
