Bigger, brighter and fater - Release candidate
« on: February 12, 2009, 12:31:33 am »
We are proud to announce the first public version of SeeYou Mobile for Car Navigation devices (aka PNAs)!

After the first announcement of the availability of a beta version we were flooded with volonteers who were eager to beta test the software. The excitment was growing as we managed to test SeeYou Mobile successfully on more and more different types of PNA devices.

In order to continue the development and extinguish the overwhelming demand to test SeeYou Mobile on PNA devices we have decided to create a Release Candidate version.

Why?
As the number of devices was growing, the complexity of dealing with all different types of devices, screen resolutions and settings proved to be unmanagable. We had to pick a few which are supported initially. We will of course support more devices as they become available and properly tested. The release candidate works seamlessly on HP 31x Travel Companion devices, all Navigon and most if not all Mio devices.

What is a Release Candidate?
It is a version which is almost complete in terms of new features. Only minor features will be added from now until a proper release version. The aim of a release candidate is to make sure that all features are stable and that the user interface is scrutinized into details. This release candidate intentionally comes without any documentation. It is aimed at more skilled users. Less skilled users should be able to use it on fully supported HP, Navigon and Mio devices nevertheless.

What's new in this version?
Not much! Not in terms of functionality anyway. The switch to the new platform forced us to rewrite some of the very basics of SeeYou Mobile. The main challenge was to get equal functionality on PNA as was (and is) available on PDA devices.

There are new features after all. SeeYou Mobile now works on any screen resolution, large or small. It has gained a full screen QWERTY keyboard which replaces the standard device's keyboard (SIP). The dialogs are optimized for portrait and landscape use to name a few. But please consider the ability to run SeeYou Mobile on PNA devices as the main new feature.

Is Naviter expecting feedback from users?
By all means yes! We have extended the Windows CE/PNA part of our Support forum with subforums where each device can be discussed. All devices are different, much more so than PDAs. Let's keep the support questions in the proper forums for others to find more easily.

Will Naviter continue to support PDA devices?
Yes! In fact you can use this release candidate on PDA just as well without any changes.

OK, OK. Where do I download the new version!?
It's here: SeeYou Mobile Download page
Installation for the supported HP, Navigon and Mio devices is as simple as it gets:
. download the ZIP file
. extract its contents to the root of your SD Card
. put the SD Card (or Micro SD in case of a few Navigon devices) in the slot
. reset the device and wait for it to boot up. It will boot right into SeeYou Mobile
Problems? Please use the Support forum.

How do I run the Car navigation software?
Take the card out of the slot, then soft reset the device with the card out. You can put the card back inside after the car navigation software has started.

ENJOY!
