Can mCU communicate with the Garmin GPS via the USB port, with a USB/serial adaptor?

Does the communication between mCU and the GPS enable routes to be uploaded and downloaded?

Many thanks.

It seems that reliability and compatibility can be a serious issue with the USB/serial converter. Can anyone recommend a particular converter, bearing in mind that there probly needs to exist a driver for the PDA, in this case hx4700?

hx4700 doesn't have a COM port - what are you talking about?

Get the serial cable to connect to your hx4700 and all worries about USB are gone.

Let me brake this discussion.

I personally use HX 4700 through the serial port and works very well.

It is true that the supplied cable doesn't have a 9-pin serial connector. You need to buy the cable as an accessory either with a new unit or from one of the soaring shops which often have an all-in-one cable

Thanks guys. Apologies, but I found it very hard to determine that the hx4700 actually had a usable serial port, I do feel like such a plonker now. But, even the User Guide that I downloaded said nothing about it, so I made that posting in desperation :) Only yesterday did I found out all I needed and realised the hx4700 must surely be the best device for the purpose... so I ordered one in the afternoon (apologies for not updating this forum entry as it had escaped my mind).

I had also been to a fair amount of effort to determine which might be the best navigation software to run on it and I have to say that, even without having used it, all indications are that it must be mCU :) (reasons: product maturity, makes allowance for paragliders and strength of forum). Thanks again, and looking forward to getting all the kit together :)
