USB-to-serial cable by Socketserial for Windows CE
« on: December 04, 2008, 02:48:44 am »
Hi, I have found this http://www.socketserial.com/support/USB-to-Serial/USB-to-Serial_downloads.htm product that claim to be windows CE compatible.
I downloaded the driver for Windows CE 5 /ARM ( a cab file) .
I think I'll try it with a normal USB-to-serial cable for PC, since the hardware should be the same.
Before I try, anyone got a suggestion ? What do you think? (I don't want to brick the HP314).

The k6 is very expensive, it costs more than the HP itself.

USB communications supports the concept of HOST and SLAVE devices.
Only a HOST devices can initiate communications (like a PC). I suspect the USB interface on the HP314 has been designed as a slave device to communicate with a PC HOST and therefore it will not work :-(

Any news about this subject?
I would like to know more about the best wiring system.
If the 314 can work as host, I believe that USB port also needs to be configured as serial, as is needed to work with Active Sync.

Not being too familiar with a windows CE or HP 31x device;

Can somebody confirm there is a hardware issue to configure the USB port for serial communication, or is it not possible to configure any USB (or other) com port as a (virtual) serial port (I doubt the last problem)

It would be really nice just to hook the HP with any flightcomputer/FLARM in the same way as other PDA devices...

PDA-Einbau told me it’s impossible, because we can only convert an USB port to serial if the device is master, not slave.
The question is if there is any way to convert the IPAQ 314 as Master.
PDA devices come with serial port, so there is no such problem.
PDA-Einbau told me that the only way to connect devices to the 314 is connecting those devices to an Bluetooth emissor and receive in the 314 by Bluetooth.

I am still not quite convinced. Windows CE supports OTG. So we should be able to configure...
Can anyone point to the chipsets being used. Most probably drivers are already available!

When I see this TCM Adapter, then I think there must be a possibility to link a datastream to the PNA device.

In the black box is au FM receiver wich transform the FM TMC signal to USB datastream with traffic information!?

We only need such a black box for FLARM traffic information and/or e-vario data to link to PNA device ;-)

Update...  not only the 314 has got a serial rs232 which can be activated by grounding usb-B pin4+5 , but also supports USB OTG and thus master-slave switching, and the serial USB driver is already installed.

Hi coolwind,
that sounds very interesting. Have you managed to connect the 314 via serial rs232/USB OTG as you describe to a vario like the Cambridge 302 and establish communication?
With my Ipaq 3950 the CAI 302 provides +5V DC and serial data via a single cable, looking to emulate that to a PNA.
