Hi John. I have had a couple of flights with the Oudie on one side and the AV8OR on the other. I have no doubt that the AV8OR is much brighter, which makes it more easily readable in the cockpit in spite of the smaller size. On the other hand, the Oudie is not too bad in this respect, and I agree that the extra screen size of the Oudie is a worthwhile advantage.
My Oudie also suffers from the imprecise flickering which you mention when you are trying to select something small on one of the setup pages. I ran the calibration routine as carefully as possible.
A further advantage of the AV8OR if you use the internal GPS is that the internal GPS has an excellent receiver, better than the Oudie. The benefit is that the screen keeps up to date with your position more quickly, so that for example you could use the orientation of the glider on the screen to turn out of a thermal on track. It gets satellite lock more quickly than the Oudie, and I would guess that both altitude and wind direction are likely to be a fraction more accurate as a result of the good quality GPS receiver. However, again the Oudie is not too bad in this respect (I have not had any loss of GPS position in flight, for example).
Taking into account the price advantage, software optimisation and support, there is no doubt that I would now recommend anyone who does not already own an AV8OR to look to the Oudie as the platform of choice for SYM. However, the AV8OR is probably still a fraction better IMO mainly because of the brighter screen, and I hope Naviter will create a software version for it incorporating most of the changes in the Oudie software.
