SYM Local Time display
« on: November 01, 2009, 12:37:55 am »
I have "Synchronise system clock with GPS" checked in Settings/Hardware page and I have selected GMT time zone for the UK in the AV80R GA flying and vehicle navigation programmes but my SYM local time Navbox and SYM GPS status page both display a time 8 hours/time zones behind local time.

I have good GPS reception and the AV80R Settings/GPS Status/Lat,Long,Alt,UTC all display correctly

I cannot find any other places to input a time zone on the AV80R (or on SYM).  I guess there might be another time zone offset somewhere on the AV80R - presumably in WinCE but, if so,  I do not know how to access it.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Your assumptions are exactly right. We have added UTC Offset to the next version of SeeYou Mobile. We hope it is available shortly.

Are you going to provide a software version with a fix for the local time problem soon?

Having seen some improvements in the Oudie software, I will you will offer some of these soon. Two particular issues with SYM on the AV8OR which have been dealt with much better on the Oudie are that it is difficult to change between menu pages, and that menu font sizes are too small if you want to have all the necessary info on screen. In particular, on the task setting 'KEYB' page the letter keys are very small to press (if there is a way of getting good size keys on this page please will someone tell me?).

Apart from these issues I find the AV8OR a good platform for SYM, with the screen so much more readable in the cockpit than any iPaq. I have not yet had more than a quick look at the Oudie, but on my first look the Oudie did not seem as bright as the AV8OR - in which case I think the AV8OR would still be the best platform for SYM in spite of the Oudie's larger screen size. Has anyone carried out a direct comparison?

Mark,

I have compared both displays together running similar SeeYou Mobile pages several times in various situations and the display brightness and sunlight readability of the AV8OR and Oudie look  identical to my eye.  The bigger display of the Oudie makes a noticeable difference to usability in flight.

I find that the AV8OR touch screen function is better in some ways  - although I have no idea whether it is a software or hardware characteristic.  In my Oudie the cursor wobbles about between adjacent small font fields selected with the stylus in the settings pages and I keep selecting the wrong choice. Once the user's Oudie profile is established there is no problem with the larger finger tip sized fields in the flight pages.

Hi John. I have had a couple of flights with the Oudie on one side and the AV8OR on the other. I have no doubt that the AV8OR is much brighter, which makes it more easily readable in the cockpit in spite of the smaller size. On the other hand, the Oudie is not too bad in this respect, and I agree that the extra screen size of the Oudie is a worthwhile advantage.

My Oudie also suffers from the imprecise flickering which you mention when you are trying to select something small on one of the setup pages. I ran the calibration routine as carefully as possible.

A further advantage of the AV8OR if you use the internal GPS is that the internal GPS has an excellent receiver, better than the Oudie. The benefit is that the screen keeps up to date with your position more quickly, so that for example you could use the orientation of the glider on the screen to turn out of a thermal on track. It gets satellite lock more quickly than the Oudie, and I would guess that both altitude and wind direction are likely to be a fraction more accurate as a result of the good quality GPS receiver. However, again the Oudie is not too bad in this respect (I have not had any loss of GPS position in flight, for example).

Taking into account the price advantage, software optimisation and support, there is no doubt that I would now recommend anyone who does not already own an AV8OR to look to the Oudie as the platform of choice for SYM. However, the AV8OR is probably still a fraction better IMO mainly because of the brighter screen, and I hope Naviter will create a software version for it incorporating most of the changes in the Oudie software.
