LX5000 Connectivity
« on: July 01, 2010, 08:21:13 pm »
I am considering purchasing an Oudie to replace my aging and difficult to see IPAQ H3950. My main flight computer and IGC logger is an LX5000. I also want to utilise Flarm radar using data from my original Swiss Flarm.

Currently after a flight, I use a serial cable to connect my IPAQ to my LX binder round serial port, and using ConnectMe, download the flight to an SD card which I can then transfer to my PC.

Questions:
1. If I installed an Oudie and connected the data wires (I assume Rx, Tx and Ground) to both my Flarm and my LX5000, could I use FLARM radar in flight, and then after flight use ConnectMe and Transfer on my LX5000 to download my flight?

2. If the answer to the above is no, is there a mini-USB to round binder serial cable that I can use to download the IGC files from my LX5000 after flight?

3. I currently use a PC, PC-Binder serial cable and LXe to transfer Airspace, Airports and Waypoints to my LX5000. Can I install and use LXe on the Oudie to transfer Airspace, Airports and Waypoints to my LX5000?

1. You would still need to change cables. You can not be connected to two serial devices without further complication (but it is generally possible to create a switch if you prefer that than changing cables)

2. Oudie comes with a variety of cable connectors. We would suggest you to use your existing PC cable (Binder to DB9 connectors) to connect the cable to Oudie's serial and data cable.

3. No, unforuntately you can't install LXe on Oudie. It is a Windows CE based device.

Thanks.

It sounds like I need to wait until I hear that Oudie to Binder serial cables are available.
Then I would have three serial cables for my LX5000!

Binder - DB9 for PC
Binder - flat IPAQ serial (for current IPAQ)
Binder - Oudie connector (for future Oudie)

Further to my previous post - the only serial port on the Oudie seems to be a mini-USB port.

The "Dickie Feakes" manual does not show pictures of the supplied serial cables but makes the ominous comment:

"It is important to understand that the Supplied Serial cable must be connected to 12 V direct
current source in order to work."

I want to be able to use ConnectMe on the Oudie to download my logger, before leaving the glider with the IGC file on my Oudie SD card. The Oudie will already be charged up. My LX5000 does not supply volts to my Binder connector - just GND - RX and TX.

Without full installation instructions for the Oudie and wiring diagrams, I will not be purchasing until I can be sure it is all going to work.

Hi Rory,

I am looking for the same answer. There was a post on another thread which gave a few of the pin outs on the serial cable here:

http://www.naviter.si/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,238/topic,3842.0

My best guess on the way to power the serial cable with 12V (and hopefully then the oudie with 5V) is to add 2 more wires to the DB9 connector from the glider 12V and GND. I just dont know which pins the 12V needs to come in on, and as the cable is quite nicely heat shrinked I don't want to tear it open to look!

Cheers,
Shaun

The new cables that we are now bundling with Oudie will enable you to do this. Please read the Getting Started > Connecting to the GPS Source > Cables and converters section of the Help file:
