Borrowing Oudie some problems
« on: August 02, 2010, 06:51:00 pm »
Hi,

I've been using SeeYouM on an iPaq.  The iPaq is having problems I can't resolve.  A friend might sell me his Oudie which I have been exploring for a day now.  A few good points over the iPaq

-there is more real estate on the screen for lots of NavBoxes which is great
-it's really compact because it's thin.  Probably same mass as my iPaq
-GPS built in for less cords around the glider
-you can use your finger for almost everything instead of the stylus, bug plus
-no hardware buttons, but you can place soft keys anywhere in the screen to simulate them
-screen is quite a bit brighter than my iPaq 3700

But I have some rather disturbing bugs I haven't resolved
-I can set the units to NM as many times as I want and save the profile, but on reload it always gotes back to MPH.  Same with the cross country speed
-most of the colors for NavBoxes don't work
-if I use the USB so the Oudie is a mass storage device, my PC sees it, I can copy data OFF the Oudie, but if I try to place data in the Oudie memory, or erase an IGC file, it locks my PC and the action never happens.  Same problem on my WinXP laptop.
-I can sort of get around this problem by using a microSD card
-also it often takes two presses on the screen to get items to work.  Like I press menu, nothing happens, I press a second time and the menu page comes up.  Some keys don't do this, some do.

Anyone have similar problems?    akiley

I have heard the latest info from a reliable source that major part of the Oudie screen response problems are due to the Oudie is slow to react and display the requested next screen because of the large airspace and map files in the resident memory. The processor is not fast enough to deal with these large files and therefore the response is quite slow. The only solution is to use smaller files. Naviter needs to explain to owners how to put in place a procedure to manage these files to allow the Oudie to operate at a more than dismal speed.

Speed is not an issue with the Oudie I have.  It seems to do everything at a reasonable speed.  The key press issue is not that I'm waiting for the Oudie to take action.  It's that the key often makes the tone, indicating that I have pressed the key, but the action doesn't exicute.

I think the odds are better using a stylus, and maybe being very careful to calibrate the stylus accurately.  That being said, maybe it's not that great as a touch screen using a finger.

Hi Bob,  I using John Sullivans Oudie.

Start the Oudie, Quit SeeYou if it's running, at the main screen hit the top right arrow icon to get to the second page, then hit the calibration icon.   akiley

To answer one of my own questions.  I found in these forums the updated exe file mSeeYou.exe that can by copied over the older one in the Oudie internal memory.  This file fixes two of the problems I had.

1. it fixes the NavBox color selection so that I can now select colors for NavBoxes.
2. it fixes the units reverting to MPH every time you shut SeeYouM, even if you save the profile.

It does not however fix my problem communicating with WindowsXP via the USB port.  The Oudie shows up as a drive on the PC as it should, I can copy files OFF the Oudie but... I can't copy a file TO the Oudie internal memory without it freezing my PC requiring a hard reset.  I managed to copy the newer mSeeYou.exe file using a Mac laptop.  The laptop copied the files but the laptop complained but at least didn't freeze like the PC.  PC laptop running XP also does the hard freeze.

I have tried this on two PC's both running XP, and also on a Mac.  I tried several different usb cords.  All three computers had this lockup problem if I tried to copy files TO the Oudie internal memory or erase a file from the Oudie internal memory like an IGC file.  The Mac didn't act up as badly, but still showed problems.   ... akiley

I have two minor software issues:

In Pan Mode, the screen no longer displays the words 'Pan Mode' to let you know where you are. (I have now seen an Oudie without the firmware upgrade, and I found that pre firmware upgrade the device used to display 'Pan Mode').

The Start symbol seems only to be able to have the writing in white, so it cannot be used in transparent format.

Please let me know if I am missing something, or if these changes are deliberate for some reason.

1. The "Pan mode" text is still there. It's semi-transparent - is that why you have missed it?

2. We hope that non-transparent Start symbol is not a problem. I can't think of a reason why it should be transparent?

Thanks for your answers.

1. I generally have map and terrain turned off, and against a white background the Pan Mode text is completely invisible. I was happier with the way it was before.

2. I suppose it is fine for the Start symbol to be solid. Please can you explain some things about the Start symbol, and how it relates to the information bar across the top of the screen which also seems to show Start after crossing the line. Some questions:
Can you start the task by touching either the Start symbol or the bar at the top of the screen?
Why do you not always see both at the same time?
If you want to start the task without having crossed the start line, does the task start if you touch Goto the first turnpoint on the task page?
Thanks for any info about this.
